Xabi Alonso provides update on Victor Boniface’s fitness days after accident

Victor Boniface’s fitness and well-being have raised concerns after the Nigerian forward was involved in a freak accident following Bayer Leverkusen’s league victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Boniface was a passenger in a Mercedes-Benz that collided with a truck on the way to the airport in Frankfurt, leaving many at the Bundesliga club anxious about his condition.

Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s UEFA Champions League clash against Brest, head coach Xabi Alonso provided an update on Boniface’s situation. Speaking to the media, Alonso confirmed that the forward will miss the upcoming match against the French side. However, he reassured fans that the accident was not severe.

“Fortunately, it wasn’t too serious. But an accident always has an effect; physically, he feels better, but it’s also an emotional thing,” Alonso explained during his press conference, as reported by Tribuna.

The accident, which occurred due to the driver’s fatigue, caused the Mercedes to overturn. Police have since investigated the incident, confirming that the truck driver was unharmed. Both Boniface and the driver were examined at a local hospital before safely returning to Cologne. The total damage from the collision is estimated to be around €200,000.

Despite this setback, Boniface has had an impressive season so far, contributing to eight goal involvements in nine appearances. Bayer Leverkusen will surely miss his presence in their UEFA Champions League fixture as they take on Brest.
