You cannot even transfer a chief, Gachagua tells Raila

National NewsPolitics

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has joined the bandwagon of leaders slamming Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga for his attack on US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whiteman.

Speaking on Friday, August 18, during the closing ceremony of the 2023 Devolution Conference in Eldoret, Gachagua called out Raila for labelling Whiteman a rouge ambassador.

“We need also to be respectful to our development partners. You cannot speak in a  public forum before national television and say that you have the capacity to recall an ambassador from the United States accredited to this country by the American government,” Gachagua said.

According to the Deputy President, Raila is an ordinary citizen who has no power to even initiate one of the lowest raking local transfers let alone recalling the American ambassador to Kenya.

Gachagua said the opposition chief is yet to come to terms with his election loss in the 2022 Presidential loss, his fifth in as many attempts.

“As a private citizen, how can you recall an ambassador? You cannot even transfer an assistant chief in your local sub location. You know, it is part of the denial syndrome,” he said.

The country’s second in command claimed that the former Prime Minister enjoyed unwarranted favours in the second term of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime and that that makes him think he is all-powerful.

“That cabinet ministers were being told to go and brief a private citizen on what was happening in government. That is why that private citizen thinks he can recall the American ambassador to go back to the country. That situation is over,” Gachagua claimed.

Gachagua’s remarks come a day after the Azimio honcho referred to Whitman as a rogue envoy, following her remarks that Kenya held free and fair elections in 2022.

Several leaders aligned to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance have called out Raila for his remarks led by President William Ruto, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, her Nandi counterpart Stephen Sang, and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.
