Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has offered his candid advice to Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who recently announced his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
While expressing goodwill, Cherargei emphasized the challenges associated with mounting a successful presidential campaign in Kenya.
Taking to his social media, on his official X page(formerly Twitter), Cherargei outlined the logistical, financial, and strategic hurdles Omtatah would face.
He highlighted the need for substantial financial backing, estimating a minimum of Ksh7 billion to fund an effective campaign.
Furthermore, Cherargei stressed the importance of having an established voting bloc and a grassroots network capable of mobilizing support, even in areas with limited access to social media platforms.
“Running against President William Ruto will be a tall order,” Cherargei stated, pointing to Ruto’s remarkable 2022 victory against Raila Odinga, the government-backed candidate.
Cherargei described Ruto’s political acumen and campaign strategy as unparalleled, cautioning Omtatah to prepare for a highly competitive race.
Omtatah’s Preparations Begin
Undeterred, Senator Omtatah has initiated steps to formalize his bid. In a gazette notice, he announced the formation of a 10-member Presidential Exploratory Committee tasked with evaluating his chances and laying the groundwork for a potential campaign.
The committee, whose work begins immediately, will operate for 18 months, with its mandate concluding either when Omtatah formally declares his candidacy or decides not to run.
The committee will play a pivotal role in assessing voter reception, developing campaign strategies, and identifying areas requiring focus to ensure a robust campaign.
This move signals Omtatah’s serious intention to vie for the country’s top office, a significant shift from his current role as a vocal legislator and public interest advocate.
A Unique contender in the race
Okiya Omtatah, widely known for his activism and legal battles, has built a reputation as a champion for justice and accountability.
His decision to vie for the presidency introduces a fresh dynamic to the 2027 race, as he positions himself as a candidate of integrity and reform.
However, critics argue that his transition from activism to national politics will require significant adjustments and resources to resonate with Kenya’s diverse electorate.
