Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department for Agriculture Dr. Paul Ronoh has challenged Narok farmers to use their expansive lands to plant wheat so as to increase the production of wheat in the country from five percent to 20 per cent.
This initiative, he said, will decrease importation of wheat from other countries and build Kenya’s economy.
Dr. Ronoh said this today when he flagged off over 305,000 bags of planting fertilizer and another 100,600 bags of top-dressing fertilizer to benefit the farmers in Narok County.
Ronoh spoke at National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), Narok branch in the company of Governor Patrick Ntutu where he promised steady supply of fertilizer in all the NCPB stores around the county.
At the same time, the PS warned potato venders who take advantage of innocent farmers to package the potato bags more than the recommended 50 kilograms, that they would be arrested and prosecuted.
On his part, Governor Ntutu said over 125,000 bags of wheat were lying at the NCPB, asking the PS to negotiate for friendly prices with the millers so that the farmers can sell their produce.
He said the county had recruited 210 agri-entrepreneurs, young men who have been taking key agriculture messages to the grassroots.
