The African Nations Championship Local Organising Committee (CHAN LOC) Chairperson Nicholas Musonye has issued a tough warning to AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia ahead of the highly anticipated 93rd Mashemeji Derby set for Sunday at Nyayo Stadium.
Musonye made it clear that any acts of hooliganism or vandalism during the match will lead to a ban on both clubs from using the newly renovated stadium.
“I have said this before, and I know the President (Hussein Mohamed) was just being polite. If a single seat is destroyed or Stones thrown around ,those two clubs( Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards )will not be allowed to play here again,” warned Musonye.
He further emphasized that Nyayo Stadium will be closed immediately after the derby in preparation for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will take place in August at both Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums.
“We have only four months to CHAN, so if we overuse Nyayo and Kasarani, they won’t be in good condition for the tournament,” he added.
FKF President Calls for Peaceful and Electric Atmosphere
Meanwhile, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed has urged fans to turn up in large numbers for the historic clash while maintaining a peaceful and festive atmosphere.
“Kenyan football fans are in for another thrilling match this Sunday as the Mashemeji Derby takes center stage,” said Mohamed.
“We urge supporters to fill the stadium, enjoy the game, and ensure a great matchday experience—just like we saw last Sunday. Let’s cheer passionately but with respect and peace.”
The highly anticipated clash between Kenya’s two most successful clubs will kick off at 4 PM at Nyayo Stadium.
