You can travel from Nairobi to Naivasha and back using only KSh400 with an electric car, this is according to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company.
The utility company says that by purchasing KSh400 worth of electricity tokens, owners can fully charge their electric vehicles in under an hour, enabling them to travel up to 240 kilometers on a single charge.
“With four hundred shillings worth of electricity tokens (400/=), you get to charge your electric car to full capacity in under an hour, giving you the freedom to travel up to 240kms. This is like travelling from Nairobi to Naivasha and back,” KPLC, hellbent on spurring the uptake of electric vehicles in Kenya, says.
The distance from Nairobi to Mtito Andei along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway is approximately 233KM.
The introduction of the e-mobility tariff is part of Kenya Power’s strategic plan for 2023-2028, which focuses on leveraging new business areas to sustain profitability and grow shareholder value.
With the affordable e-mobility tariff and the growing network of charging stations, Kenya Power aims to make electric mobility more accessible and attractive to Kenyans, contributing to the country’s efforts to reduce air pollution and mitigate against global warming.
“The highly discounted e-mobility tariff is designed to promote the adoption of e-mobility in the country”, said KPLC on their X account.
There are at least 14 existing or planned electric vehicle charging stations in Kenya, primarily in Nairobi and Naivasha, with more on the way as part of the country’s efforts to promote e-mobility.
Kenya Power has two charging stations located at Stima Plaza in Parklands and the Ruaraka depot in Nairobi.
