Journalist Scophine Aoko Otieno, also known as Maverick Aoko Otieno, has spoken out for the first time since her sudden disappearance weeks ago, addressing her supporters in a statement shared on her official X account on Friday, November 8.
In her post, Maverick Aoko clarified that the aide who had been updating her social media on her behalf had full permission from both her and her family. She reassured fans that she is safe and recovering, thanks to the care of her loved ones.
“Your outpouring of support, your tweets, retweets, calls, and prayers kept me going,” she wrote. “Asante for every message, every voice that spoke out for me. The flesh may be weak, but your love has kept me strong.”
She added that while she is still recovering, she is grateful for the care she is receiving and promised to reveal more details about her disappearance once she is well.
“What happened? I’ll tell you everything, every detail, every moment, but we’ll have that conversation when I’m better,” Aoko stated.
Her disappearance had sparked widespread concern, and last Saturday, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino confirmed that she had been found near the Kenya-Tanzania border.
According to Aoko’s aide, she was discovered by an unidentified person who said they found her outside their gate and took her to a nearby hospital.
Aoko expressed her gratitude for Babu Owino’s support, confirming that the MP knows her aide personally. “Babu knows this person and has met them. I know people have their doubts about politicians, trust me, I’ve had my fair share of disappointments, but Ongili (Babu Owino) is a trusted friend who has stood by me through thick and thin,” she said.
Aoko went missing shortly after a series of tweets in which she criticized powerful figures within Kenya’s political circles.
