Various YouTubers have received a shocker after the Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) demanded that they acquire licences.
The KFCB on Friday, May 24 issued the YouTubers with a 14-day ultimatum to obtain filming licences for their content.
Some of the content creators that have been directed to obtain licenses include Oga Obinna, Terence Creative, Awinja Nyamwaki, Njugush and Abel Mutua.
The board further wants the content creators to be submitting their content for examination and a certificate of approval issued before they are shared to the public.
“Our attention has been drawn to your YouTube channel “Awilo Nyamwalo” where you have continuously uploaded audio-visual content for purposes of exhibiting and distributing it to the public, without acquiring the requisite filming licences from Kenya Film Classification Board,” a letter, sent by acting KFCB CEO Paskal Opiyo to one of the YouTubers, reads in part.
The board is now threatening legal action against content creators who will not comply with the directive.
“Take notice that unless you comply with the above in the next fourteen (14) days, we shall institute legal proceedings in accordance with the provisions of the Films and Stage Plays Act and other relevant laws, without further reference to you and at your own risks as to costs and other attendant consequences thereto,” the letter added.
